Fences: Hacks, Modifications, New Trends and Cutting-Edge Styles

Hi, my name is Johnny. For years, I worked as a handyman, and although I did a bit of everything, I ended up helping a lot of people put up fences. Over the years, I have seen what works. I have learned how to hack your need for fencing if you don't have the time or cash to put up a new fence, and how to modify and repair fences to improve their function. I have also seen a lot of trends come and go, and I'm keenly interested in what's new in the world of fencing. Unfortunately, a back injury has made it difficult for me to work so now, I explore ideas by writing about them. I hope you enjoy my fencing blog and that you learn a lot. Thanks for stopping by!

Rural Fencing: A Look at Your Options for Optimal Security

One of the downsides of living on a rural property is a heightened risk of break-ins and trespassers. With potential to access the property from numerous points and a significant amount of land to defend, there's no doubt it can be a challenge to protecting property against intruders on acreage properties.

When it comes farm security, a holistic approach will ensure the best results. However, one of the best places to begin with is investing in quality perimeter fencing which acts as a physical barrier to the property. The right fencing is not only a strong, visual deterrent, it also prevents people from unintentionally accessing private land. There are many rural fencing options available depending on individual design preferences, budget, and the level of security needed.

What are the rural fencing options available?

The following options are popular for those living on rural properties.

  • Barbed wire. This is an economical option when securing large areas and a strong visual deterrent. It also helps secure livestock; it's pretty difficult to scale especially when more than 2 metres in height.
  • Woven Wire Fencing. More sturdy than barbed wire, woven wire is a stronger option for horses and other livestock and unlike barbed wire has less risk of injury to animals. It's also more difficult for intruders to tamper with.
  • Electric Fencing. Stops would-be intruders in their tracks and is especially useful used around livestock paddocks and outbuildings and areas where additional security is needed.
  • PVC picket fencing. Another popular on farms, especially around land located closer to the homestead. While it may not offer as much of a visual deterrent as other options, its aesthetic appeal is used to create a traditional farm or ranch style. It can be made to look exactly like timber but it's plastic coating means it stands up to harsh weather and is protected against rot, requiring far less maintenance.

Additional Security & Maintenance Tips

A fence is only effective if it's maintained, and while these options all require relatively low maintenance, it's important farm owners regularly inspect fences for signs of slack wiring and make repairs if necessary. Other tips to get the maximum security benefit from a rural fence include ensuring all gates are locked with heavy-duty padlocks and chains. A warning sign on the gate saying 'No Trespassing' or 'Private Property' can also go a long way in preventing against trespassing.

Other security measures for rural property owners to take include installing sensor lighting near outbuildings, acting as another deterrent for intruders who will likely move on to easier targets. A guard dog of the herding type is also invaluable in guarding livestock, which are one of the most commonly stolen resources on farms, after farm equipment and tools.

When all is said and done, for farm owners and those living on remote properties, installing rural fencing may be a big investment, but it's undoubtedly one of the best ways for have owners to have significant peace of mind about their security and livelihood.
